Celebrating 100 Years of Service

On Friday, May 25, the Feast of Our Lady of Consolation, the Conventual Franciscan Friars celebrated 100 years of service at her National Shrine and Basilica in Carey, Ohio.

Bishop Leonard Blair of Toledo presided and preached at the evening centennial Mass in the Basilica, which was filled to capacity. During his homily he commended the Friars on their devotion to Our Lady of Consolation, their care of the Shrine, and their dedication in welcoming the thousands of pilgrims who visit each year. After communion, Fr. Jim Kent, OFM Conv., thanked those in attendance for helping the Friars celebrate the event.

The song for the Presentation of Gifts was written especially for the centennial by friars Nick Dragone (music) and Bryan Hajovsky (lyrics).

Students from Our Lady of Consolation School presented 900 petitions for the Friars in gratitude for their presence and ministry, and placed them before the statue of Our Lady in the Basilica.

Those in attendance included a large number of Conventual Friars, women religious, and diocesan clergy.

Other events this year will continue the centennial celebration:

  • The annual pilgrimage and novena beginning on August 6 and finishing on the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15
  • The Minister General of the Conventual Franciscan Order and the Assistant Generals of the Order will celebrate the Noon Mass at the Basilica and the 2:30 pm Shrine Devotions on September 22-23
